Limbo tells the story, in a general sense, of a boy who wakes up in a forest clearing. It's a good game, with an artistic visual approach, intelligent puzzles and terrific pacing all working in its favor, but there's no getting around the fact that from beginning to end, the adventure will only provide most players with three or four hours of entertainment. As the first Xbox Live title to appear in the 2010 lineup of Microsoft's annual "Summer of Arcade" promotion, Limbo will set you back a whopping 1200 Microsoft Points. I have precisely one problem with Limbo: it costs too much. Something is wrong with the world and, for the right sort of gamer, that will feel very right." Yet even with the signs of life all around, there's a striking sense of isolation. Insects fill the air, mist rolls through the trees and clods of dirt fly into the air as the hero scrambles along ledges or wades through knee-high grass. The lush forests and the imposing industrial areas that you'll explore over the course of your adventure are presented with exemplary attention to detail. Nothing could be further from the truth, however. You might suppose that Limbo would be an ugly game as a result, or that things would quickly blur together into a thoroughly forgettable mess. "The first thing that you're sure to notice is the monochrome visual design. My favorite may have been the Shiitake-Shoyu, however –an intensely ‘shroomy broth that is impossible but for professionals to get just right. Behold a bowl of the former with a garlic-sesame emulsion on top (by then the egg was just a memory). The Spicy Red Miso was notable for its wollop of heat (the perfect thing to punch a hole through a cold congestion) and miso underlyings along with the same savory soup ingredients. The Tonokotsu Shio had an incredibly meaty tasting pork broth along with sliced pork belly and a soft poached egg and a lovely tangle of uber-fresh ramen. Our group sampled three of the four, and each had its own myriad of charms. But be patient, Grasshopper – I will get to that in good time.įirst off, let’s start with the ramen. It opens with a famously portentous epigraph that begins ". Through a thin veil ofpseudonyms, it deals with the author 's family, his youth in Asheville, N.C., and his passage to manhood at the University. Look Homeward, Angel, Wolfe's first novel, appeared in 1929 and is heavily autobiographical, above: Women ofKappa Delta singing to rushees outside the sorority house at Ole Miss, 1996. The rambling, wildly eloquent young writer enrolled here at the University of North Carolina in 1916 and began to practice his talents. Our Thomas Wolfe is a big presence in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, the town where I work and where Southern Cultures originates. I'm talking about Thomas Wolfe, the author oíLook Homeward, Angel, not the contemporary Tom Wolfe, who recendy skewered Atlanta with his own novel, A Man in Full. Is there a lesson here? Perhaps I should explain. It was sitting in the card catalogue all the time, while I had been groping blindly on the Internet. A porch from which to look at the countryside, the dusty road, the infinite sky, the carts with horses passing by.In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:įrontporch I finally found the unfound door to Thomas Wolfe. Do you know what it means to be, or even to become, American? Being American, for me, a shepherd coming from Wales, means to have a porch between my existence and the world. We just looked at the house, the empty garden, the curtains on the windows, and the airy porch. None of us had the strength or the ability to say much. He wrote us letters full of passion for its polite cows, simple food, and women’s hearts. My brother was already there, in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania seemed like a very exotic name for us, a name that meant a house, some land, and silent nights on an American porch to remember the solitude of Wales. My wife with a child inside her, a baby that would be an American, the first of us. We had just a few things with us, mostly distant memories and dirty clothes. You don’t take a trip like this if you don’t have some future to bring with you, tightly packed in your luggage. It was, we thought, enough to look at the sky to hope for the future. In Wales, we may have beautiful grey clouds and green valleys as you cannot even imagine, and the magic torpidity of foggy mornings. Nowhere in Wales did we have this kind of sky: grand, vast, at times even frightening in its curve and reach. The trip was long, the heat sometimes unbearable, the train very slow, very crowded, very noisy. My thoughts will serve as suggestive threads, but to you, reader, is left the final interpretation. Or possibly for looking differently - with a different gaze - at our own history: either the old history of a nation or a new history of photography. These images can also be used as a lens by which to reveal other scenes and stories. Banal, yet tender, this set of photographs does not only portray the daily gestures of life on the porch and the functionality of this distinctive space. 2 In weaving fictitious and real memories, personal and quoted reflections, these notes attempt to “ventriloquize” the images and to listen to them, without a storyline or individual captions. “All photographs”, John Berger once wrote, “are contributions to history, and any photograph, under certain circumstances, can be used in order to break the monopoly which history today has over time”. Instead, here I will treat these photographs as objects of and for history, a history in the lower case. Nor do I aim to search for the people portrayed in the photographs, or to elucidate what specific action is depicted in each image. 1 Agreeing with him, my intention is not to invent an art history of “the porch photograph”, for these photographs do not belong to the world of art history. Photo-historian Geoffrey Batchen reminds us that snapshots are an art historian’s worst nightmare, for they resist “value judgments”, which is, of course, “a key element of traditional art historical practice”. Meanwhile, while there is a generous list of free maps, a few maps are premium and will require payment to download.Īll Deeper sonars except the Deeper Start and Pro will allow you to create a bathymetric map of the water where you fish. It’s recommended that you download offline maps using your phone’s internet connection as it’s faster. There is a huge range of maps that you can download for free for your preferred location. The app also gives you access to download and use offline maps, which can serve for reference purposes. This will allow you to plan better and save more time. Just like a regular fishfinder, the Fish deeper app will allow you to mark your favorite fishing spots, and you can also log your catches. Mark Favorite Spots and Log Your Catches. The fishing type selected will determine the amount of information shown on the display. There are four fishing types standard, ice, boat and onshore fishing types. The app also allows you to choose your preferred fishing type. A low beam angle offers the best clarity but a smaller area is scanned while a high beam angle will allow you to scan a wider area, but with less clarity. The selected beam angle determines the area scanned as well as the quality of the sonar return. You can select from low or high for the Deeper Pro series, while you can select from low, high, or mid if you own a Deeper CHIRP sonar or the Pro Plus 2. You can select your preferred beam angle depending on the sonar type you’re using. You can show fish icons on the screen, their depth in the water as well as turn on or off the fish alarm that goes off when a fish is detected. The app will also allow you to choose to enable or disable fish icons. Low sensitivity is best for dirty water while high sensitivity is best for clear water. You can choose between high and low sensitivity. You can also choose the display sensitivity. You can choose between basic which shows only vegetation and water depth or raw which shows more detailed images of fish. The app also allows you to choose the display mode. The night fishing feature can only work with the Deeper Night Fishing Cover which is sold separately. You can also turn on the night fishing feature to enable you to see the sonar scans better in the dark. This will allow you to get the best viewing experience irrespective of the ambient light conditions of the environment. The app allows you to choose your preferred display color depending on the time of the day you’re fishing. What I really like about the Fish Deeper app is that it’s very intuitive and also easy to use. Fish Deeper app – Some of the Available Featuresīecause the Fish Deeper app acts as the display that allows you to see fish and other objects in the water, the company has really put in a lot of effort as evident in the huge number of features present on the app. Once successfully paired, you will now be able to see fish and other objects in the water right from your phone’s screen. The fishfinder will automatically turn on, and then you can pair it with your phone from the Fish Deeper app. Once the app is installed, charge the fishfinder to full, and cast it into the water. The app is available on both Apple app store and Google Playstore. The first thing you need to do when you receive the Deeper CHIRP or CHIRP 2 is to install the Fish Deeper app on your phone. The Deeper CHIRP and CHIRP 2 are both equipped with WiFi that allows you to pair the fishfinder with the Fish Deeper app installed on your phone. But in the case of a castable fishfinder, your phone acts as the display that lets you see what’s going on in the water. This is slightly different from a regular fishfinder which has its own display screen as a separate device that can be connected to a transducer via a cord. Just like other castable fishfinders, the Deeper CHIRP requires the Fish Deeper app to enable you to see fish and other objects in the water. It’s important to know how the Deeper CHIRP and CHIRP 2 castable fishfinders work. CHIRP is a regular feature on high-end transducers, but this feature is now available on castable fishfinders like Deeper CHIRP and CHIRP 2. As a result, it offers far more image clarity that lets you easily detect and catch more fish. Unlike a traditional sonar that sends out a single frequency beam at a time, CHIRP sonars ( Compressed High-Intensity Radiated Pulse) sends out a continuous flow of frequencies ranging from low to high. Before we talk about the respective features of Deeper CHIRP and CHIRP 2, let’s define what a CHIRP is. All it needs is a pair of analog stereo inputs (which any receiver will have) and ProLogic II. With his permission, I’m just trying to explain it here.įor as perhaps ridiculously complicated as they may be to install, one of the saving graces of these experiments is that they can be assembled relatively inexpensively. Credit for that goes to Scott Simonian and others at AVSForum who helped him work it out. The silly Zatmos and Scatmos nicknames can be more formally grouped under the heading of “Dolby Atmos Extended.” I want to be clear here that I did not develop the Scatmos process. Eventually, I knew that if I was going to do this, I needed to do it right. However, in recent months, my attitude changed and I grew less satisfied with the Zatmos configuration. I felt that the results I had with Zatmos were good enough to get me most of the way there, and I had a certain amount of egotistical pride that I’d figured out a way to do it with just one extra receiver rather than two. The complexity of installing, connecting and configuring three A/V receivers seemed like overkill to me. Over at AVSForum, a member named Scott Simonian had gone even further to use a total of three A/V receivers in unison to create a 7.1.6 configuration (affectionately known as “Scatmos”) more accurate to the intentions of the original Dolby Atmos sound mixers.įor a while, I decided not to go that far. The better solution is to install additional speakers in the center between the other height channels (Top Middle position). Those speakers are now fixed in place with wiring through the walls and ceiling, and I can’t move them without remodeling the room. This issue is compounded by the fact that the locations where I had installed speakers when I built the home theater (before immersive audio was a concern I gave any thought to) were less than ideal for Atmos. That, combined with a low ceiling, makes it difficult for just four speakers (two in the front of the room and two in the back) to image a sound above my head convincingly. My own home theater is a long room with a lot of space behind my seats. Nonetheless, for some of us, a limit of four height channels isn’t enough to fill the top of the room with sound.
